The mains service providers have no significant difficulties in supplying potential business investors. Water, electricity and gas are all readily available. It is important to note that the completion of the Regional Sewerage Scheme means that there are more than adequate sewerage disposal facilities immediately available.

Telecommunications

Of particular importance to the development of businesses that will utilise hi-tech communications, is the existence of fibre-optic trunk lines passing through the town. A local IT consultancy has identified that Penzance has the best telecommunications infrastructure in Cornwall. The telephone exchange was completely re-equipped in 1996 with the latest state-of-the-art digital equipment and with sufficient spare capacity to accommodate the business needs even at Super Janet multi-media standards.

The District has a long association with international telecommunications and technology, and the prevalence of such businesses in the area was instrumental in the formation of TelNet, a network of some 100 SME and individual teleworkers in the area. That in turn led to the locally co-ordinated but E.C. wide IVth Framework project EBNET (European Business Network for SMEs) and subsequently to local involvement in the COPERNICUS project EUROLINK. Such European projects provide the potential for the ready establishment of Penzance as a centre for further telematics activities in the European context and for the acquisition of further E.C funding for locally based Telematics projects.

Superfast Cornwall
